What Was Gunpowder?

Gunpowder was invented in China around the 9th century. It's a mixture of three chemicals: saltpetre, charcoal, and sulphur. When you light it, it explodes with incredible power. At first, the Chinese used it for fireworks and signalling. Then they realised it could launch projectiles β€” and warfare changed forever.

The Old Way of Fighting

Before gunpowder, armies fought with swords, spears, and bows. Soldiers needed to be close to their enemies. Knights wore heavy armour to protect themselves, and armies fought in lines facing each other. Castles had high walls and towers, designed to stop soldiers climbing in with ladders.

Think of it like a video game where your character wears a full suit and fights with a sword β€” you need to be right next to your enemy to damage them.

Guns Changed Everything

When cannons and muskets became common, everything changed. These weapons could shoot deadly projectiles across long distances. Suddenly, traditional castle walls weren't very useful anymore β€” cannons could smash through them. Heavy armour became pointless because bullets could pierce it. Soldiers didn't need to be as close together or in tight formations.

Think of it like switching from a board game to a video game with a gun β€” the rules of how you attack and defend are completely different.

New Battle Tactics

Armies had to rethink their strategies. Instead of charging at each other with swords, soldiers lined up to fire muskets. They practiced drills to reload quickly because early guns were slow. Generals started using open fields instead of crowded castle defences. Armies became larger and more organised.

Stronger, Flatter Fortresses

Castles changed too. Instead of tall walls, military architects designed star-shaped forts with low, thick walls that could survive cannon fire. These forts had bastions (corner towers) so defenders could shoot cannon balls in all directions.

Think of it like changing your Minecraft fort from a tall tower (easy to destroy) to a wide, low fortress with extra defensive towers.

The Big Picture

Gunpowder didn't just change how battles looked β€” it changed who had power. Countries with strong armies and navies using guns dominated the world. This led to European exploration and colonisation. Technology had completely transformed warfare and history itself.
