What is Plot?
Plot is simply the sequence of events that happen in a story. It's the 'what' — what actually occurs from beginning to end. Think about your favourite film or book: the plot includes every major event, every action, and every important moment that moves the story forward. If someone asks 'what happens in that story?', you're describing the plot.
The plot typically follows a clear pattern: something happens at the start, complications arise in the middle, and things are resolved at the end. Most plots follow a traditional structure with an exposition (introduction), rising action (building tension), a climax (the peak moment), and a resolution (the ending).
Think of it like: Plot is the ingredients in a recipe. You need flour, eggs, sugar, and butter — but that's just listing what goes into the cake, not explaining how to make it.
What is Narrative Structure?
Narrative structure is how the author chooses to tell the story. It's the 'how' — the technique and arrangement used to present those events to the reader. This includes the order events are revealed, whose perspective we see, and how the author builds suspense or meaning.
Narrative structure covers many techniques: Does the story begin at the start of events, or does it jump in halfway? Is the entire story told from one character's viewpoint, or many? Does the narrator know everything that will happen, or only what the character knows? Some stories use flashbacks, where we jump to the past, or foreshadowing, where hints about future events are planted early.
Think of it like: Narrative structure is the method and order used to make the cake. Do you mix everything together first or add ingredients one by one? Do you bake it slowly or quickly? The ingredients (plot) stay the same, but the method (narrative structure) changes the result.
Why Does the Difference Matter?
The same plot can be told in completely different ways. Imagine a story about a surprise birthday party. One author might reveal the party is coming from page one, building excitement as we watch the characters prepare. Another author might keep it secret, revealing the surprise only at the very end, shocking both the character and reader together.
Understanding both plot and narrative structure helps you appreciate how skilfully an author has crafted their story. It's not just about what happens — it's about how cleverly they choose to tell it.
