Two Different Things

Many people think the internet and the World Wide Web are the same thing. They're not! Understanding the difference is really important when you're learning about computing and technology.

The internet is the actual network of computers and cables that connect devices all around the world. It's the physical and digital infrastructureβ€”the roads and highwaysβ€”that allow information to travel from one place to another. Without the internet, nothing digital could be shared between computers.

The World Wide Web (often called the Web or WWW) is just one service that uses the internet. It's a system of websites and web pages that you can visit using a browser like Chrome or Safari. The Web uses HTML code to display pages with text, images, and links.

Think of it like this: the internet is like the roads and delivery trucks in a city. The World Wide Web is like the shops and libraries you visit using those roads. The roads existed before the shops, and they can be used for many other things besides shopping!

What Else Uses the Internet?

The internet does much more than just power the Web. Email is another service that runs on the internet. So is online gaming, video streaming, and social media. You can also use the internet to send instant messages, play online games with friends, or download files. The Web is just one part of the bigger picture.

A Quick History

The internet was created in the 1960s by scientists and military researchers. But the World Wide Web wasn't invented until 1989 by a scientist named Tim Berners-Lee. He created it to help scientists share information more easily. The Web made the internet much easier and more fun for everyday people to use.

So remember: the internet is the network that connects everything. The World Wide Web is just one amazing thing that uses that network!
