Why Talk About Weather and Seasons?

When you meet someone new in a foreign country, one of the easiest things to chat about is the weather. It's happening all around you, everyone experiences it, and it's a safe, friendly topic. Learning to describe weather and seasons in a foreign language gives you a superpower: you can start conversations almost anywhere in the world.

Basic Weather Words

Most languages have simple words for common weather conditions. In Spanish, you might say "hace sol" (it's sunny), "está lloviendo" (it's raining), or "está nublado" (it's cloudy). In French, "il fait beau" means beautiful weather, while "il pleut" means it's raining. In German, "es ist warm" means it's warm and "es schneit" means it's snowing.

Think of it like learning colour words — once you know "red," "blue," and "yellow," you can describe almost any object. Similarly, once you learn five or six weather words, you can describe most days!

Each language has its own way of talking about temperature, wind, and precipitation. Some languages say "it rains" differently than others, and that's totally normal — languages are like different tools designed by different cultures.

Talking About The Four Seasons

The four seasons are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In Spanish: primavera, verano, otoño, and invierno. In French: printemps, été, automne, and hiver. Each season brings different weather patterns and activities.

Spring is when flowers bloom and it gets warmer. Summer is hot and perfect for holidays. Autumn is cooler and leaves change colour. Winter is cold and often snowy. Learning these words helps you explain what you like to do in each season.

Think of it like learning the names of rooms in a house — once you know them, you can tell someone exactly where you are and what you're doing there!

Making Conversations

Combine weather words with season words and you've got a real conversation starter. You could say "En verano hace calor" (In summer it's hot) or "En invierno nieva" (In winter it snows). People love talking about their favourite season and weather.

The brilliant thing is that weather happens every single day, so you'll have endless opportunities to practise these words. Every conversation is a chance to learn and improve!
