What Is a Theme?

A theme is the big idea or message that an author wants to explore in their text. It's not the plot—which is what happens—but rather what the story is really about. Themes are often lessons about life, human nature, or the world around us.

Common themes in literature include friendship, courage, love, jealousy, betrayal, growing up, and good versus evil. These big ideas can appear in books, poems, plays, films, and even songs.

Think of it like a present with wrapping paper. The plot is the wrapping—colourful and exciting. The theme is the gift inside—the real treasure that matters most.

How to Spot Themes in Texts

Finding themes takes practice, but there are several places to look. Start by paying attention to what characters learn during the story. When a character changes their mind about something or discovers something important, that often hints at a theme.

Look at what happens repeatedly in the text. If characters keep making the same mistakes, or if certain symbols appear over and over, the author is probably trying to highlight something important. Also notice what the author seems to care about most—which scenes get the most pages, which moments feel most emotional, and which ideas get discussed seriously by the characters.

Pay attention to the title and opening lines too. Authors often plant clues about their main themes right at the start. Finally, think about how the story ends. The conclusion often reveals what the author believes is important.

Think of it like detective work. You're looking for clues scattered throughout the text that all point to the same big idea.

Different Texts, Multiple Themes

Most stories don't have just one theme. A book might explore friendship, loyalty, and the cost of ambition all at the same time. Your job as a reader is to find the themes that matter most and explain how the author develops them through characters, events, and language.

Remember, not everyone will spot the same themes—and that's okay! Themes are ideas to discuss and explore together. The important thing is to support your ideas with evidence from the text.
