What Are Rules?

Rules are the instructions that tell us how to play a game or sport properly. They explain what you can and cannot do, what counts as a point, and when the game ends. Every sport—from football to netball, from chess to tag—has its own set of rules.

Rules Keep the Game Fair

Imagine if some players could use their hands in football while others could not. That would be completely unfair! Rules make sure everyone follows the same instructions, so nobody gets an unfair advantage. They level the playing field, which means everyone has an equal chance of winning.

Think of it like a school test. If one student could use a calculator and another could not, that would not be fair. Rules in tests ensure all students follow the same process.

Rules Keep You Safe

Many sports rules exist to protect players from getting hurt. In rugby, there are rules about how to tackle. In netball, you cannot run with the ball. In boxing, you must wear protective gloves. These rules stop people from being seriously injured while they play.

Rules Give Structure and Order

Without rules, a game would be chaos. Nobody would know when to start, when to stop, or how to score points. Rules create order so that everyone knows exactly what is happening. They tell you how long a game lasts, how many players can play, and what the goal is.

Think of it like a classroom without rules. Nobody would know when to be quiet, when to raise their hand, or when to listen. Rules help everyone understand what to do.

Rules Let Everyone Enjoy the Game

When everyone follows the same rules, the game becomes fun for everyone. Players respect each other, matches are exciting because they are fair, and people want to play again. Breaking the rules spoils the fun because it makes the game unfair and confusing.

Who Makes the Rules?

Different sports have different organisations that write and change the rules. For example, FIFA creates the rules for international football, while the International Rugby Board decides rugby rules. These organisations make sure rules are fair and still allow for new, creative ways to play the game.
